Spawning - Part 1

Courtship:

This step is by far the most interesting step in breeding bettas. Especially for first time breeders, it would be nice to have a camera handy to capture this KODAK worthy moment :)

Below are pictures of a short fin male (wild type) courting a female. The steps are as follows:



After introducing the pair, the male will start building his bubble nest. Although not necessary, having a styrophoam cup will help keep the male betta's nest one place.




The female will respond to the male's interest in spawning and will display black/white vertical stripes on her body.



The male will continue building his nest all the while chasing the female around the tank. At this point, if the male becomes over aggressive, separate the pair by putting the female in a jar inside the tank.



After completing his nest, the male will become less aggressive and will not attack the female anymore. He will court the female in "gentlemen-like" fashion. The male will slowly approach the female and "dance" around her. If at this time the female is willing to breed, spawning will occur.
